Our Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists instruct our students how to travel independently, safely and efficiently. Students are evaluated on an individual basis to determine their need for instruction as well as the amount of time needed to meet their unique needs.
Students receive instruction in the Human Guide technique that facilitates travel with another person. They also receive indoor and outdoor travel instruction. Spatial and positional concepts are presented which help students to build knowledge and skills that facilitate maintaining orientation, route travel, and map reading. Techniques in the use of the long white cane are also provided when it has been determined that it is needed.
Older students receive instruction in the use of public transportation including the use of buses and trains. Students learn to access schedules and plan routes utilizing public transportation.
